Tucked in the basement of the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing is now the University of Manitoba League of Legends Student Group (ULoL). The team is part of a sport revolution that is sweeping across the world, and they would like you to know about doing it.
“The League of Legends team right now is a club,” said the advertising coordinator for the team Lorhiz Aquino. “Our main assignment, and our aim, is to comprehend the neighborhood and the ability that we have on campus, and also to grow those opportunities for gamers and also to develop this community. ”
Esports are usually called video game contest at a skilled or semi-professional degree. Leading the way is League of Legends (LoL) — a multiplayer online conflict arena game developed by Riot — where two teams battle to destroy a collection of towers, en route to shooting the competitor’s foundation.
“Esports is basically competitive videogames,” Aquino said.
“It’s hard to describe when you’re speaking to somebody who doesn’t even know esports and that I believe that’s part of this barrier we have to get over with new students and getting out the word about our team. ”
According to Aquino, the gift in the U of M is substantial compared to the contest.
&ldquo ;We essentially need to be a team that the college acknowledges for our success we’t brought to the faculty,” she said.
&ldquo ;We have some of the most talented gamers in North America — our competitive teams — and we all believe they deserve more resources and we would like to bring those tools to our members. ”
The team has had success on the collegiate gaming circuit, using its own three teams competing in the ULoL College and Collegiate Star League (CSL). ULoL College covers collegiate clubs in North America, although the CSL is a semi-pro league to get esports.
“They ’ve been rival in semi-pro leagues for many years and making scholarship money,” Aquino said. “Last year our branch team placed second in the toughest conference and proceeded to lose to the eventual champions of the whole CSL tournament in the playoffs. ”
Aquino reiterated the value of bringing new 13, resources, in addition to, to the college. The team bolsters a number of the top talent on the continent, and a single participant, Tom Rodov, even made it to Scouting Grounds, which operates like a scouting blend for professional esports teams.
In 2016, South Korea-based SKT Telecom T1 took home the LoL World Championship, coming back from a 2-0 series deficit to triumph. They took home the Summoner’s Cup trophy, along with a $2 million purse — split ways — in front of 20,000 fans at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, home of traditional professional sports clubs the Kings and Lakers and that has a maximum capacity of 21,000 audiences.
For the time being, the team is content to continue growing. Interested viewers can observe the team’s groups play on the popular streaming website Twitch every Saturday.
Aquino said that another overarching purpose is to have esports recognized by U SPORTS along with the NCAA. She also noted the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto have established esports apps, drawing major attention to their own schools.
The U of M team is looking beyond merely LoL and expects to rebrand to cover most of the competitive gamers on campus, ” she said.
“We’re looking to include more games down the road,” Aquino said.
“We’re actually working to change our title next school year to be U of M esports, because I believe it better represents what we &’re trying to do, and this’s going to include more matches and more gaming platforms, to create more opportunities. ”
